Opus plans, Sonnet builds: how I split the work

One orchestrator that plans and reviews, several builders that write the code.

One message from my phone at lunch (“offload what you can to Sonnet 5.5”) and Claude, running Opus, split the work into four jobs, handed each to a Sonnet agent, and checked what came back.

Opus is the orchestrator: it plans and reviews. Sonnet is the builder: in my experience the best, and the cheapest, at actually writing the code. The agent map in Claude Code shows every agent and how many tokens it used.

Try it yourself

  1. Run your main session on Opus and tell it to offload what it can to Sonnet agents.
  2. Let Opus split the work into separate jobs and review what each agent hands back.
  3. Watch the agent map to see every agent and how many tokens it used.
